I joined Twitter very, very late and have never really embraced it. I don’t like cocktail party-style mingling IRL, though, so maybe that’s my beef with Twitter? I just find it really difficult to navigate.
As far as IRL connection, I find being outdoors extremely helpful. I’ve had so many lovely interactions with people when I’m out walking my dogs, running, or hiking. I’ve made some of my best friends out on the trails.
I found that Twitter got harder and harder to connect with as it got bigger. Information just moved so fast it was sort of hard to figure out how/when to jump in even if you wanted to. I can totally see it being hard to connect with at that point. I fell off using it well before the recent exodus of users, for that reason (well partly that, and partly that is just felt really angry there).
I love that the trails have been such a source of connection for you! I've found that to be true of running groups- I think the shared experience of being on the same trail or running the same route can really help as a jumping off point for connection. Do you think that having your dogs with you sometimes opens up conversations? I know I often stop to pet other people's dogs (with permission, lol) which gives a chance to talk a little bit.
Oh, yes. My dogs definitely serve as conversation starters, even when they’re not with me. If I happen to be out running without them or at the grocery store, for example, people I don’t know will stop and ask me where my dogs are. :)
